Last trip of the season–Burgundy and Piemonte wine regions

On my way back to Vancouver after a terrific private 12 day long biking trip in the Burgundy and Piemonte (Barolo) wine regions. We had the best both regions have to offer: Michelin star restaurant cooking workshop, fabulous wine tastings (Roty, Hudelot Noellat, Domaine de la Vougeraie, Louis Jadot, Marc Colin, Domaine Esmonin, Luciano Sandrone, Conterno Fantino, Elio Grasso, Chiara Boschis, Giorgio Pelissero, Marchesi di Gresy), private wine dinner with Luc Bouchard from Bouchard Père & Fils and 3 great producers of La Morra (Marco Marengo, Revello, Giovanni Corinno),  private pasta and Italian cooking workshop and so on, and so on…! Weather was great and my clients LOVED the experience:

Yannick,
Let me echo the Raleigh’s and thank you for a terrific holiday!
Glad you made it through the border. I made it through Alba and am on my way to Bologna. After Alba we rode by Barbaresco. I had no idea that we rode so far! (My driver was amazed!)
Regards,
Charlie

Glad to hear border crossing went well. Still waiting for plane to depart and this champagne doesn’t measure up to last night’s asti. (…)
Great time with biking, cooking, drinking and eating. Yannick — you are the best! Have a good trip back and I can’t wait to be able to do this again.
My Best, Dianne

Yannick,
Thanks for a fabulous trip.  (…) ,
Greg

Burgundy in for an early harvest

If good weather continues over the next few weeks, Burgundy growers will start harvesting during the second fortnight of August. Obviously harvest dates will depend on the variety and the specific site but the bunch closure stage was reached at the end of June with grapes already the size of a “good pea” according to the local marketing board. Flowering was a staggering three weeks early compared with 2010 and 18 days earlier than the 1994-2010 average across-the-board. The grapes are described as very healthy and although it is too early to predict the quality of this year’s vintage, currents signs are said to be very encouraging.

One part of Burgundy is not so optimistic however. The Rully appellation area suffered serious damage recently from hail. Press reports claim that as much as 50 or even 80 percent of a total 360 hectares under vine were destroyed. Again, weather conditions over the coming weeks will be decisive as some vines may still be able to recover from the damage and good weather would prevent the spread of disease. Hailstones tore grapes open and any disease could spread to entire bunches.
